2024 Carey Wrapped
As 2024 winds down, we asked Carey seniors to look back on the year’s most unforgettable moments. From big wins to heartfelt traditions, here’s what made this year at H. Frank Carey High School one to remember.
Seahawks Take Long Island Championship
This year, the Carey Seahawks won the Long Island Championship game against Hills East, winning the Class ll crown! The game was a close call, but with a minute remaining, the Seahawks achieved the impossible! “That feeling when we won was the best feeling of my life,” said senior Chris Obertis. “This moment stands out to me because it is my senior year and going that far meant so much to me!”
Brewing Kindness at PALS Cafe
Who doesn’t love a good cup of coffee and a baked treat to start the day? This past year, PALS students opened their café on the last Friday of each month, giving the carey community an opportunity to help build social skills and confidence. One student shared: “Not only did I enjoy having coffee and treats in school, but knowing that the cafe is for a good cause makes it even better! It brings the school together, which is what we need!”
P.S. I Love You Day
The Carey halls turned purple for P.S. I Love You Day last February, a time for promoting kindness and raising awareness for suicide prevention. Between the bake sale and all the activities throughout the day, Carey came together to spread an important message: kindness matters, and you’re never alone.
Open Mic Night
In March of 2024, Carey’s hidden artists, poets, singers, and musicians came out to share their original work and performances at Open Mic Night, hosted by the English and Art Honor Societies. The library was packed with students and teachers who came to show their support for all the creatives that make up our student body. If you missed it, keep an eye out for Open Mic Night 2025!
Physics at Six Flags
What’s better than learning physics? Learning it at Six Flags! Last school year, the 11th-grade physics students put classroom concepts like velocity, acceleration, and energy to the test on iconic roller coasters!
HFC Theatre Department Hit the Stage
Carey’s Theatre Department brought the house down with two iconic productions: Grease the Musical and Clue. The performances showed off the incredible talent among the students at Carey, which deserves its own spotlight!
Winter Concert
The Winter Concert hit all the right notes this year. “The Winter Concert December 2024 stood out to me because it was unbelievably good. The Senior High Orchestra had a really amazing soloist, Mark, and the Chamber Orchestra sounded especially good this year!” shared one student. “There’s no concert like Carey’s concerts.”
Carey Cheerleaders Win Counties
Carey’s Cheerleading team had an incredible year, winning section 8 of the County Championships and placing second overall in the state! The Carey cheerleaders brought unparalleled energy and passion to every routine they performed. Most students know them for their Carey spirit during Homecoming and Pep Rally, but the Carey Cheerleaders made it big on the competitive stage this year too!
Challenge Day
This October, Challenge Day gave students and staff a chance to hit pause and focus on mental health and tune into their emotions. “One of my Carey moments from 2024 was when I attended challenge day,” said one senior. “I got to see my teachers not being teachers for the day and I saw a side that I didn’t think I would ever see.” Through activities and honest conversations, it was a day to reflect, reset, and remind ourselves that everyone is facing their own challenges.
Looking Back
2024 was a year of victories, creativity, and community. We’ve all gone through obstacles and changes, but most importantly, we came together as a community. As our seniors go through college applications and prepare for their next chapters, as our athletes push themselves to beat records, as our artists, musicians, and performers continue to shine on stage and beyond, we open into a new year!
Here’s to carrying this momentum into 2025!
