From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honor the cultures, histories, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In Carey, this month is an opportunity to learn more about the rich traditions, influential leaders, and powerful stories that have shaped our communities. Whether it’s through music, food, art, literature, or history, Hispanic culture is deeply woven into the fabric of our country. Let’s take this time to celebrate diversity, embrace inclusion, and appreciate the many ways Hispanic heritage enriches our lives every day.
As such, we must celebrate influential Hispanic figures during Hispanic Heritage Month for their lasting impact on history, culture, and society:
César Chávez – A civil rights leader and labor activist who co-founded the United Farm Workers, fighting for better working conditions for farm laborers.

Sonia Sotomayor – The first Latina Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history, known for her advocacy for justice, equality, and representation.

Selena Quintanilla – A beloved Mexican-American singer and cultural icon who helped bring Tejano music to mainstream audiences.

Roberto Clemente – A legendary Puerto Rican baseball player who was also known for his humanitarian work off the field.

Frida Kahlo – A Mexican artist celebrated for her powerful self-portraits and her influence on modern art and feminist expression.

Dolores Huerta – A civil rights activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, known for her slogan “Sí, se puede” (“Yes, we can”).

Lin-Manuel Miranda – A Puerto Rican-American composer, actor, and playwright who created Hamilton and In the Heights, highlighting diverse voices in American theater.

These are just a handful of the numerous figures who have helped shape history and inspire new generations through their courage, talent, and dedication. Thus, we would like to take a moment to appreciate these influential figures.
Lastly, Carey Clipper would like to thank the Spanish department for creating beautiful pieces of artwork for Hispanic Heritage month. If you would like to see the artwork, it’s located in the Science Department Hallway. Please go check it out and enjoy it!
