On November 5, the students that participated in Carey’s 2024/25 musical production, The Little Mermaid went to see Mamma Mia! in its Broadway revival.
Showing at the Winter Garden Theatre, Mamma Mia! is a hit musical written by Catherine Johnson and based on songs by the sensation ABBA. The show includes songs like, “Honey, Honey”, “Super Trouper”, “Slipping Through my Fingers”, and the titular number, “Mamma Mia”. The show takes place on a Greek Island, where Sophie Sheridan is preparing to get married. She wants nothing more than her father to walk her down the aisle. However, she doesn’t know who he is. After reading her mother, Donna’s diary, she invites three men that may be her possible father to the wedding. As the show goes on, the audience sees into the lives and relationships of Sophie and Donna Sheridan. The cast of the show included Amy Weaver as Sophie, Erica Mansfield as Donna, Grant Reynolds as Sky, and Carey alumni Haley Wright as Ali!
After the show concluded, some cast members stayed with the students and did a Q&A component. They answered the students’ questions about performing, how to maintain health, and what it’s like to be on a Broadway stage. The gesture meant a lot to the young performers, who are still navigating the lives of performers themselves.
A special thanks to everybody who made the trip possible, it was truly an amazing time!
